Not a whole lot of people get to know and love their great-grandmothers, but I was blessed to have both my great-grandma's in my life into adulthood. My great-grandmas have passed, but they were wonderful women I was privileged to know and love dearly.
Both of my grandmas are still living and active in my life now. My Grandma I. is a huge part of my life. I spent every weekend as a child with her, and she took me to church every Sunday. She showed me faith and love. I got saved at a Christian rock concert she took me to when I was seven. We were inseparable! We even moved to a house right behind her's. Almost every morning I would walk to Grandma I.'s house before school. She would make me breakfast and let me wait on her porch for the bus. She taught me about God, music, old movies, and soap operas! Even now I try to see her as often as possible, and when we go out to eat we still fight over who will pay the bill. She came to live with me while recovering from knee surgery a few years ago, and I felt honored that I could give back to her even a little of what she gave to me growing up.
I had a strained relationship with my Grandma P. when I was a child. We both have very strong personalities so we clashed a lot, but I always knew she cared. I have wonderful memories of her taking me down the shore in the summer that I will always treasure. As I got older I understood my grandma more. We became closer when she came to stay with me for a few months while she was between homes. I'm happy to add memories of that time with her to the ones from when I was a little girl.
Both of the times my grandmas came to live with me were wonderful blessings. Having them in my home allowed my boys to spend special time with them. They played and laughed. And with my one grandma, the boys took care of her in little ways. She told us so many stories about our family life when she was younger. I would not give up those months for anything! Reach out to your grandmas if you can. Many of them gave so much to their families; and even those who for whatever reason don't need us now still want to see us and part of our lives.
When I got married, I gained two more great moms! Carol is a warm and loving woman who fits in well with my family-- she is loud and proud and fits perfect in our big Italian family. She and my father-in-law live in Virginia, but they come to NJ to visit and we visit them. I always wish we could visit each other more; we never see them as much as we should or would like. Carol is a big personality, and she'll give you an honest opinion whether you want it or not. I love that about her. She makes my father-in-law very happy, and loves my husband, my boys, and my dog! That makes her pretty great in my book. My other mother-in-law, Barb, is a quieter person, but she's just as fun and talkative. She adores my boys and loves spending weekends with them. She is very laid-back, which is a huge contrast to the hustle and bustle of my home. She too, is willing to give honest advice and lend an ear to listen. She has lived many places, but now that she lives in New Jersey we are able to see her more often and take advantage of that fact as much as possible.
I am so glad that I have these women wonderful women in my life! I'm especially glad to have them in my boys' lives. Spending time with them is teaching my boys to respect the older generations. In return they get so munch mamma love it is crazy! These beautiful women shower them with love and spoil them with affection. They are all strong women, who model for my boys qualities I hope they will look for when it comes time for them to choose their own partners in life.
Thank you Mammas, for all you are!
